Losing weight is simple math. 1 pound is equivalent to 3500 calories.
However everyone is different. This article may seem overly mathematical at first but I do get to my point. What works for Susie, might not work for Sally. If we break the 3500 calorie concept down in order to lose 10 pounds you would either have to cut 35,000 calories out of your diet, or increase your activity to burn an additional 35,000 calories.
This appears at first to be impossible, but yet we see it on the reality weight loss shows. If you take the fact that a 200 pound person needs 2000 to merely survive each day and then divide 35,000 by 7 (5,000) subtract the 2000 to get 3000. Now lets assume that you eat 1500 calories each day, because face it you need to eat. You have to add that back in. So we are officially up to 4500 calories.
So let’s see what things burn calories. I’m only going to pick a few examples just to make my point. You will burn about 400 calories per hour riding a horse; hand washing dishes 200 calories, jogging 700 calories. But let’s return to reality, if you are reading this for the information and not for the contestyou probably aren’t able to spend an hour doing any vigorous activity unless you only want to lose 10 pounds and be done. So unless you have a personal trainer and a doctor close at hand losing 10 pounds week after week is actually dangerous.
Anytime we start a new diet program and increase our water consumption we magically loose a big chunk of weight 5 to 15 pounds in my personal experience. Then, she guides you through a discussion or activity focused on becoming a smarter eater.
3. Motivation: Each week, you need to weigh in before a Weight Watchers employee. She records your weight loss, notes the total lost so far, and discusses any questions you have that week. Knowing someone else will see your progress each week can be quite motivating. At the meetings, they also acknowledge anyone who met a goal (stayed on the program for 16 weeks; lost their first 5 pounds; lost 10%; lost weight on vacation – whatever, the idea is to motivate and support you!)

1. Diet with a friend: again, we’re talking support and accountability. Besides, it just makes the whole process more fun!
2. Don’t feel like you are on a diet: actually, Weight Watchers lets you eat anything (as long as it’s in your points range). If it’s your daughter’s birthday tomorrow.
